Belbin’s argument for measuring behavior points the same way: focusing on words and actions lets people discuss what actually happened, and because behavior sits within a person’s own control, feedback on behavior gives a workable lead for development in a way that judgments about personality do not.

So the first observable practice implied by the central principle is simple: separate what you saw from what you concluded, and hold the conclusion loosely.

Behavior reflects interacting influences and context

No single factor explains why a person acts as they do. iMotions lists genetics, hormones, brain chemistry, and neural pathways among the biological influences on behavior, alongside emotions, thought patterns, and past experiences. USC’s Applied Psychology program adds internal factors such as perception, learning, and personality, plus external factors including culture, social status, and group influence. This is an old idea in psychology.
